Biology is the study of living organisms: their structure, function, organization, origin, and evolution. Tilly’s lab seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the genetic and epigenetic drivers of cell lineage specification, differentiation and death, and to then utilize the information gained from these studies for development of innovative new technologies to improve human health within and across. Traditions of medicine, collective knowledge from physicians, works of prominent historical figures such as Aristotle eventually coalesced into the field of study we know today as biology.
The term biology comes from the Greek βίος (bios), meaning life” and from the Greek λογία (logia), meaning study of”. While more than a third of Oxford biology graduates go on to further study such as a research doctorate or postgraduate course in an applied field, over half embark on a professional career after graduating in areas as diverse as conservation, industry, finance, medicine, media, teaching or the law.
At Dartmouth biology, you’ll find diverse disciplines, prestigious faculty with a breadth of experience in biological processes, and next-generation resources and equipment. Our authors and readers reflect a broad interdisciplinary group of scientists who study molecular, cellular and organismal physiology in an evolutionary and environmental context. In neurobiology you will concentrate solely on the nervous system, often focusing on the brain, with the goal of developing treatments for both psychiatric and neurological ailments, and contributing to the advancement of knowledge of the most complex and least understood part of the human body.
That’s why each year, our professors welcome students into their labs or into the field, working side-by-side on original research, asking questions that no one has answered and looking for solutions that are yet to be discovered. We explore a wide range of fundamental biological questions with a focus on molecular cell biology at all levels, from molecular structure to human disease. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes, workshops and supervised time in a studio or workshops, and you’ll take part in fieldwork study and external visits.
These students receive free on-campus housing and a living stipend during their research fellowship, allowing them the freedom to fully devote their time to investigating an area of their own interest. The core strands that unite all the various disciplines and sub-disciplines of the subject are: the study and characterization of living organisms and the investigation of the science behind living things.
